J&J Product A properly installed sand volleyball court can provide years of trouble free use with very little maintenance, but significant up front work is required. Following a few basic guidelines will help you to build either a quality recreational or professional sand court system. Soil types, surrounding topography, annual rainfall, and other local factors may require variations from the basic guidelines that will be provided. Proper installation of the standard posts is essential for satisfactory service of the J&J kits. Court Location The most important decision when installing a sand court is the location. A high, well drained, and wind protected location is ideal for a court system. Trees located 20ft to 30ft away from the court can provide shade for spectators and added scenery, but can also add to the burden of keeping a court clean. Orientation of the court really depends on when the court will be used most. During the middle of the day, an east-west court works well for equal glare for both courts. For late afternoon and early evening, a north-south direction may be more favorable. For windy areas, aligning the net centerline to the typical wind direction may override the sunshine concerns. Recreational Or Professional Courts/Size The required sand perimeter is dependent on whether a recreational or professional court is required. The amount of sand, and therefore the court cost, will be significantly different. A compromise between the two may be needed to fit the usage & space available. See the attached table for recommendations and specifications concerning court size and perimeters. Construction Of Courts To hold the sand in place, it is usually best to remove 12" minimum of soil (18" recommended for professional courts) from the landscaped location of your court. By removing more soil, and thereby adding more sand, the chance of having the substrate becoming mixed with the sand is reduced. The soil removed can be used for additional landscaping. Berming the soil on three sides of the court and leaving one side open can help to reduce wind and water erosion while still allowing court runoff drainage. The amount of additional drainage that may be needed for your court is very dependent on substrate soil type, annual rainfall, natural drainage, and use of the courts. A well drained court can be used even during rainfall, reducing league cancellations, rescheduling, etc. If drainage lines are required, 4" perforated PVC with coarse gravel or pea rock surrounding the lines should be adequate. Consult local authorities on tiling and drainage for the best recommendations. In many cases, a high court with good natural drainage may eliminate the need for additional drainage. For some conditions, gravel placed below the sand makes a noticeable difference in drainage capability. Post Installation Two 6" x 8" x 14ft (16ft for Power Deluxe) minimum length customer supplied posts can be purchased from most local lumber yards. Treated posts are recommended for extended life. The wider face of the posts should face towards the court (narrow face towards net). If steel standards are desired, either 4" Nominal (4-1/2" outside diameter schedule 40 with .237" wall thickness) water pipe or 4" x 4" x .25" thick wall square tubing are both readily available and of sufficient strength. The length of the steel poles should be long enough to extend below the cement footing to allow condensation inside the tube to escape. An 18" minimum diameter pair of holes at least 5-1/4 ft deep (7-1/4 ft for Power Deluxe) below the substrate level are to be drilled 36ft apart prior to installation of the sand court. Position a post in each hole such that the distance from the net top cable to the sand (when added later) is 8ft. This will insure a regulation 8ft men's height after the sand and net kit have been installed. The posts should be held as close to vertical as possible and held to a 36ft center to center distance. Add cement around each post to the same level as the surrounding grade before sand is added. After a minimum of 48 hours of cement curing time, you can begin installing your J&J sand court kit. Some customers have requested the ability to remove their standards during off-seasons for various reasons. To allow this, an outer sleeve should be cemented in place instead of the pole standard. The sleeve should be sized to allow easy insertion of the pole standard with at least 3ft of overlap. The bottom of the sleeve should extend below the cement footing to allow condensation inside the sleeve and pole standard to escape. A 1/2" diameter or larger cross bolt should be placed in the sleeve at the correct height to hold the inserted pole standard at the correct height. Court Borders After soil has been removed for later addition of sand, place a divider border around the perimeter of the court. The border can be made of 2" x 12" boards and 4" wide vinyl edging. When the sand is later added, the edging should be only slightly above the sand surface. Position the 2" x 12" boards in place with wood stakes. Keep the heads of the stakes at least 3" below the sand surface. Sand Installation The type of sand to be used for your court is as important as the location. A high quality grade of masonry sand should be used. The sand must be fine, clean, and have low clay content. Coarse sand will make players' feet raw in a short period of time. You may have enough trouble keeping your court clean without starting out with dirty sand to begin with. A sand high in clay will crust easy and will be harder to play on. Ask for quantity discounts when obtaining quotes for sand. Spray weed killer on the substrate before adding the sand. Contact local authorities for the proper spray selection. Spread the sand evenly over the substrate, completely filling inside the border. Keep extra sand available to makeup for sand loss. You will now be ready for installation of one of the J&J sand court kits. We welcome any suggestions, comments, questions, etc. to help us better serve our customers.
